I'll take an organic salad but please hold the BPA tainted receipt!

I was shocked to read this EWG article about a study done on cash register and credit card receipts. This study showed they contained high levels of the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A(BPA) in 40% of 36 receipts. BPA is linked to neurological issues, cancers, reproductive problems, and so much more. These 36 receipts were collected from seven states and the District of Columbia from fast food restaurants, big retailers, grocery stores, gas stations and post offices. The BPA has been shown to easily rub off onto the hands of people who handle them. Federal data showed that retail workers contained 30% more BPA in their bodies than any other adults. YIKES! I worked in retail for all of my teen years. Could this be the cause of my fertility issues? The source of the BPA is the paper. The ridiculous thing is that there are BPA free paper available! Why isn't everyone using it? A list of which stores contain the highest levels so you know which receipts to be careful with.

The Good news is here are a list of retailers that use BPA Free thermal paper for their receipts: Target, Starbucks, bank of America ATMs, And EWG is working hard to get top retailers to change their ways.

What can you do to protect you and your family:

~Don’t allow children to handle receipts

~Don't put receipts in your grocery bag with food items.

~Keep any receipts you have to save in a seperate envelope

~Wash you hand thoroughly after handling receipts

~Don't use hand sanatizer after handling a receipt it increase the amount of BPA you absorb

~Keep receipts out of recycling because it contaminates all of the other recycled paper
